Orange Date Cake

2 cups Sugar
1 cup Butter
4 Eggs
1 1/3 cups Buttermilk
1 teaspoon Baking soda
4 cups Flour
2 tablespoons Grated orange rind
1 pound Chopped dates
1 cup Nuts, black walnuts are best
~ Sauce Ingredients
2 cups Sugar
1 cup Orange juice
2 tablespoons Grated orange rind
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time beating well after each addition.
Dissolve soda in buttermilk. Add sifted flour in 3 parts alternately with milk.
Beat until smooth after each addition. Add orange rind, dates and nuts. Bake in
a tube pan 1 1/2 hrs at 325º.
Sauce: Heat sugar and orange juice till sugar is dissolved. Pour over hot cake
into which holes have been punched. Allow cake to cool in pan.
