1 C. pure maple syrup
2 eggs
3 t. shortening
½ t. nutmeg
4 C. flour (approximately)
½ t. salt
1 t. baking soda
1 t. baking powder
2/3 C. sour milk
Combine all liquid ingredients. Beat well. Add flour sifted together with dry
ingredients.
Stir to a soft dough, roll about ½" thick; cut with doughnut cutter. Heat oil
or shortening to about 370 (a cube of bread will brown in 60 seconds). Slide
doughnuts carefully into pan, and fry until golden brown, turning when they rise
