Hobo Bread
Recipe by Firefighter: Michael Templeton - Nordegg
Ingredients
½ cup hot water
2 cups raisins
4 tsp. Soda
¼ cup margarine
1 ½ cups brown sugar
1 ½ cups white sugar
2 tsp. Vanilla
5 cups flour
3 eggs
Directions:
HOBO Bread Original Recipe Pour water over raisins and add soda. Set aside.
Cream sugars, and margarine. Add remaining ingredients and raisins mixture,
water and all. You’ll need a mixer to mix this batter. It is a very stiff dough.
When you get it mixed, put into 2 loaf pans that have been well greased and
floured or lined with wax paper.
Bake at 350F for 45 to 60 minutes. Test for doneness before removing.
This is a great bread to pack, it’s heavy but tolerates life in a pack well.
Good with mozzarella cheese. One load serves 8 to 10. Mike’s Version (For 1 loaf
at a time – saves burning out mixer) 1/3 cup hot water ¾ cup white sugar ½ cup
raisins ½ - ¾ cup chocolate chips 2 tsp. Soda 1 tsp. Vanilla 1/8 cup margarine 1
tsp. Salt ¾ cup brown sugar 2 ½ cups flour 2 eggs Mix as above but add flour
last – gradually. Makes one loaf. One can experiment with nuts and or grated
cheese to replace chocolate chips/raisins. Also you can make mini-loaves or
muffins – less baking time.
