Jan's Toffee Squares

1/2 lb. (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup light brown sugar
1 egg yolk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 lb. (2 cups) milk chocolate, well chopped
1 cup chopped toasted walnuts or pecans
Preheat the oven to 350º. Lightly butter a 9x15-inch pan.
Place the butter and sugar in a bowl and blend until creamy and light colored.
Add the egg yolk, vanilla, and flour, blending well and scraping down the sides
of the bowl after each addition.
Spread into the prepared pan and pat down with your hands or a small rolling
pin. Transfer to the oven and bake until golden brown, about 15 to 20 minutes.
Spread the chocolate over the warm batter and let sit for 3 to 5 minutes.
Sprinkle with the nuts.
Cut when warm into 24 pieces with a knife dipped in cold water.
Makes 24 bars.
