3-ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
2-cups all-purpose flour
2 1/4-tsp baking powder
1/2-cup granulated sugar
1/4-tsp salt
1/3-cup chilled butter or margarine, diced
1/2-cup chopped walnuts
1/3-cup milk
1/2-cup packed brown sugar
1-large egg
1 1/2-tsp vanilla extract
Position the rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350º F. Lightly
grease and flour a baking sheet. In the top of a double boiler set over
simmering water, melt the chocolate, stirring occasionally, until smooth. Set
aside to cool slightly. In a large bowl, blend together the flour, baking
powder, sugar and salt. Using a pastry blender cut the butter into the mixture
until it resembles coarse meal. Stir in the walnuts. In a small bowl, beat the
milk, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla extract together until the sugar is
dissolved. Stir in the melted chocolate. Combine the two mixtures, stirring
gently until the dough holds together. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured
surface and pat it into a 7-inch circle. Place the circle on the prepared baking
sheet and use a serrated knife to score the dough into 8 wedges (do not cut all
the way through the dough). Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the top is a
darker brown. Remove from oven and serve hot. Makes 8 scones.
